Schroder & Schyler

Bordeaux. Founded 1739.

History

Schroder & Schyler is one of the oldest family-owned wine merchants in Bordeaux. The house was set up on the Quai des Chartrons in 1739, and at first it shipped spices, sugar, olive oil and wine between Bordeaux and the Baltic.

The house's own history has some good stories. During the Seven Years' War it bought an armed frigate, the Eulalie, to keep trading with the West Indies. In 1794 its four partners, all from Hamburg, were imprisoned as foreigners during the Revolution and only just escaped the scaffold. In the 1870s some barrels came back unsold from the East Indies after nine months at sea, tasted better for the journey, and were sold as "Retour des Indes". In 1883 Henry Schÿler of the fourth generation toured the American east coast and Canada looking for customers.

In the early 20th century the house bought classed growths "by subscription", taking a château's harvest in barrel, then ageing and bottling it itself. That's how the family came to Château Kirwan, which it bought in the mid-1920s.

How it works today

Today Schroder & Schyler is a merchant, not a grower. It sells its own brands, makes custom labels for clients, selects wines from smaller châteaux and is a major buyer of classed growths, both en primeur and afterwards. It runs a modern storage and bottling site with 40,000 hectolitres of tank space and 6,000 square metres of temperature-controlled storage.

Wines we stock

Saint-Émilion 2022 Private Reserve, Saint-Émilion 2015 Private Reserve, Médoc 2022 Private Reserve, Pauillac 2016 Private Selection and Saint-Estèphe 2014 Private Selection. These are Schroder & Schyler's own brand wines, chosen and bottled by the house from partner châteaux in each appellation. The house doesn't name which château each comes from.
