Côte de Beaune

A key wine-producing district of Burgundy in the east of France.

The Côte de Beaune area is the southern part of the Côte d'Or, the limestone ridge that is home to the great names of Burgundy wine. The Côte de Beaune starts between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Beaune, and extends southwards for about 25 km to the river Dheune. The trend of producing red wines continues from the Côte de Nuits to the north, down through Beaune, although the wines become lighter and more perfumed. Farther south lie the great names of white Burgundy such as Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet.

This small village on the Côte de Beaune, along with its neighbour Aloxe-Corton, shares the privilege of producing one of the most prestigious white wines of Burgundy, Corton Charlemagne. "Les Fichots", very well exposed, ignore the cold winds. They are located below the road to Beaune, nestled between two hills, that of Corton Charlemagne and that of the Iles des Vergelesses.

Undeniably a sign of quality, this wine, which can be kept and is remarkable for its tenderness, finesse and elegance, always surprises the palates of connoisseurs. Deep red color, subtle aromas mixing black fruits and spices. This well-constituted wine goes perfectly with meat dishes in sauce or a cheese platter.

"The 2018 Pernand-Vergelesses Les Fichots 1er Cru came across a little more closed than expected (tasted in 2020), but there are still attractive black currant and raspberry scents and touches of cassis to be found. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Well balanced with good density toward the finish. I suspect that the 2019 will have more grace, but this is still a fine burly Pernand-Vergelesses."
