Côte de Beaune

A key wine-producing district of Burgundy in the east of France.

The Côte de Beaune area is the southern part of the Côte d'Or, the limestone ridge that is home to the great names of Burgundy wine. The Côte de Beaune starts between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Beaune, and extends southwards for about 25 km to the river Dheune. The trend of producing red wines continues from the Côte de Nuits to the north, down through Beaune, although the wines become lighter and more perfumed. Farther south lie the great names of white Burgundy such as Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet.

There is just something very satisfying about drinking a wine with bottle age; it does not necessarily have to be from a top appellation, if the wine is only quite humble i find the experience even more satisfying. The 2009 Gerard Thomas Bourgogne Chardonnay exemplifies all of the above and more, with only 17 bottles left make the most of being able to enjoy the wine of this great vintage and Producer. Talking great vintages and the other two white wines brings up the outstanding 2014 vintage especially for the whites of Burgundy. The Chanson Pouilly Fuisse is just delicious, still evident is that lovely mineral backbone, mixed with some lovely aged fruit notes creating depth of flavour - certainly been one of my most popular wines. The Meursault premier Cru Genevrieres 2014 is profound, elegant nose blending a mineral and lemony character with toasted, menthol-like undercurrents. Astonishing fullness, finesse, lightness and freshness on the palate. The aromas are augmented by a lingering mineral dimension. A superlative wine.

For the Reds, starting with the Cote d'Or Pinot Noir from Bertrand Ambroise 2018; This charming wine features predominant fruity aromas of blackcurrant and wild red berries. Velvety and silky, this wine boasts soft, balanced structure on the palate, which ends with a delicately perfumed finish. Monsieur Ambroise is situated in Primeaux-Pressey and creates quite full bodied style which certainly enhances the longevity of the wines he creates from across the Cote de Nuits region. Staying in the same region, Lupe Cholet 2012 Nuits Saint Georges is deep ruby-red colour with raspberry gleams. Initially on the nose, there are aromas of forest-floor and slight mushroom, followed by notes of red fruit. Oaky and spicy on the palate, then cherry aromas. Perfect with red meats, red wine sauces, big game dishes. For the Chambolle-Musigny which really enjoy on these special occasions
